Anime girl on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon girl with long orange-blonde hair, a bow in her hair and a short skirted outfit, one arm raised in a peace sign and the other bent at her side. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with simple flat fills in yellow, orange, pink and blue. It is an older-looking, slightly soft photo of a lower leg against grey carpet, with the design centred on the calf.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been falling on the Saturday market since seven, and Dilys Harrow had given up pretending the awning kept her stock dry. She sorted enamel badges into their tins with fingers gone numb, while across the aisle Tomasz Kowal fried onions in a van that steamed like a kettle.

The girl came in under the tarpaulin with a carrier bag over her head and asked for a pen. She had a sketchbook tucked under her coat and an orange ribbon clipped into hair the colour of marmalade. She wanted a drawing copied onto a flimsy sheet: a girl in a pleated skirt, one hand raised in a V, the other resting at her hip. Dilys knew the pose. She had sold a hundred badges with it. "Who's she meant to be?" she asked. "Nobody yet," the girl said. "She's waiting to be picked."

Dilys traced the outline with a fine nib, lines heavy as a school ruler, and the girl coloured the skirt yellow, the ribbon pink and the eyes a startled blue, pressing so hard the paper dented. Tomasz came over with two teas and watched them work. The girl said her grandmother used to draw exactly like this on the backs of bus tickets, and that nobody in her family had ever learned to stay inside the lines.

When the market packed up, the drawing stayed on Dilys's table, pinned under a jar of buttons. The next Saturday it was gone, and in its place sat a scrap of card in careful capitals: SHE CHOSE HER OWN SKIRT. Dilys laughed alone under the dripping awning, then pinned the card above her till and kept the badges where they were.
