Nadia spread the transfers across the bus shelter bench like a fan of playing cards. Heart-eyed girls, a moon with a face, a cat in a tiara, all of them smelling faintly of the nail varnish she had used to seal them. 'They're from Japan,' she said, which was what she always said, and Mo, who had seen the same packet in Poundland in July, did not argue.

The rule of the summer was that you could only have what you could stick on yourself. So they took turns pressing the shiny films down with a thumbnail and peeling the backing away slowly, the way the instructions said. Nadia wanted the chibi girl with the enormous pink eyes, the one with the buns, because she said she looked like someone who had never been told off in her life. Mo chose the little dark-haired one with her hands cupped under her chin, because she looked bored of the whole business, and Mo thought that was the most sophisticated thing a person could be.

The transfers lasted four days. Mo's peeled at the edges on Sunday, and by Tuesday the moon had gone grey and the heart eyes had faded to two smudges. Nadia moved to Leeds in October without saying goodbye, and the rest of the stickers went into a biscuit tin under Mo's bed with a receipt and a bus ticket.

Years later the tin was still there. When Mo finally opened it on a rainy afternoon, the stars had kept their colour better than either of them had, and she found herself laughing at the little girl with the pink eyes. She pressed one to the back of her hand and held it there until it dried.
