Homer Simpson comic burst on forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cartoon Homer Simpson face with wide eyes and an open, grinning mouth, set against a pink and red radiating burst. Katakana lettering in black sits above and beside the character, and comic-style yellow and pink shapes fill the surrounding space. The bold black outlines are clean and even, with flat colour fills across the skin and a visible pink backdrop covering a large part of the forearm.

Wendell had towed cars off Route 9 for nineteen years before he admitted that the painted face on his truck door was his sister's work, not the dealer's. Marisol had copied it from a comic bought at a market in Osaka: yellow skin, round eyes, a mouth open wide enough to swallow the dashboard. She painted it in the motel car park the summer before she left, and the lettering above it, she swore, said something about a lucky spoon.

On a Tuesday in late August a woman in a silver hatchback waved him down forty miles past the last petrol station, her bonnet hissing like a kettle. She stared at the door while he hooked up her car. 'Is that supposed to be a man who lost a bet?' she asked. He said it was a face that had seen the desert and hadn't minded. She laughed, then stopped, because the heat was shimmering off the tarmac and the pink burst behind the cartoon seemed to throb in the glare.
They talked on the long drive back to the garage. She was a cartographer heading out to survey a dry lake bed, and she wanted to know why a tow truck had a comic strip on it. Wendell told her Marisol had never finished a map in her life. At the garage the woman asked him to translate the katakana. He read the words the way his sister had taught him, slowly, and realised he had been making them up for years, a joke that only the two of them would ever get.
The woman paid in cash and left a folded chart on the seat. Wendell opened it under the workshop lamp. Along the empty stretch of road where Marisol's car had last been seen, someone had drawn a small yellow face with its mouth wide open, and beside it, in careful pencil, were the same words he had invented, spelled out exactly as he had said them.
