Lady and Tramp in an ornate frame on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon dogs, a grey-and-white dog on the left and a golden-tan spaniel on the right, sitting close together inside an oval frame. The linework is bold and outlined, with smooth gradient shading on the fur, the background and the frame. The frame is decorated with orange and teal scrollwork and a braided edge, set against a dark teal backdrop, and the composition fills the thigh with the design centred.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The barque Marigold was three weeks out of Bristol when the grey dog came up the gangway in the rain. The cook swore he would have him over the side by supper, but the dog sat down at the foot of the mainmast and would not be moved, so the boy Thomas fed him scraps from the galley and called him Tramp, because that was what the sailors called anything that turned up without a name.

The captain's spaniel, Lady, was a house dog and had no use for strays. She wore a blue collar with a tin tag and kept to the stern, where the mate's wife brushed her every morning. But when the mainsail tore in the Bay of Biscay and the men were lashed to the rigging in the dark, it was Tramp who found Thomas under a fallen spar and barked until the bosun came with a lantern. After that Lady began to walk forward at the change of watch, and nobody remarked on it.

They made the River Plate in autumn with empty holds and split sails. On the last evening at anchor the captain's wife had a frame brought up on deck, an oval of teak with a braided edge and a scrolled crest painted orange and teal, to hold the picture of the ship she had waited for. Nobody could say later who had painted the dogs into it, only that they were there in the morning, one grey and one gold, sitting close.

The cook said that was the proper ending to a voyage, and nobody argued with him, least of all Lady, who had stopped using her stern at all.
