Cartoon girl with stars on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon girl with a large head, big eyes and a hair bow stands with her arms outstretched, wearing pink trousers and a grey top. Her outline is in dark grey, with pink shading on the trousers and small light blue stars scattered around her. The tattoo fills the upper part of the frame against plain skin, with the arm running vertically through the image.

Right, shush now, pass me that tea, and listen, because this is the bit about the lift on Fenner House. You know the one that stops between seven and eight when it fancies. Nobody in Fenner House believed in the girl in the pink trousers until Marnie Cole got stuck in it with a biro and a bag of satsumas, two hours on a Tuesday.

Marnie drew her on the mirrored wall because it was the only blank thing in the building. Big head, big eyes, hair done up in a bow like a parcel. Pink trousers, baggy at the knee, the sort you'd only buy from a stall on the market. She put little blue stars round her, because Marnie said a girl needed weather. The lift shuddered, and the girl blinked.

She stepped out on the sixth floor and went straight to Mr Okonjo's flat, where his wife had been making the washing go round the same five pegs since March. The girl took the pegs off the line one at a time, folded every sock, and left them in a neat stack by the door. Nobody thanked her. She didn't ask for it.

When the lift was fixed in October, the wall was clean, and Marnie swore the stars were still there, just higher up, where the ceiling light doesn't reach. Now, pass me the biscuits.
