Anime-style Rain card tattoo on a lower leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A seated blue chibi figure with closed eyes and small wings is framed in a tall yellow card border, with a yellow sun and the kanji for rain above and a banner reading THE RAIN below. The linework is bold and clean, with soft blue shading on the figure and a pale grey-cream background. The card fills the frame vertically on a leg photographed against a tiled floor.

Ilse had been told never to open the drawer during a dry spell, which was the only reason she opened it. Port Mirren had gone four hundred days without cloud over the harbour, and the cistern gauges sat at the bottom of their brass scales like coins nobody wanted to count. Inside lay the Rain card, a sheet of laminated board older than the seawall, its gold border worn down to the grain. The little blue figure sat cross-legged with its eyes shut, wings folded tight, hands cupped around a bead of light.

Her grandmother had called the deck a weather almanac, though nobody on the quay had seen it predict anything since the Thaw Wars. Ilse shuffled it on the counter and dealt the Sun, the Tide and the Moon, then the Rain, which slid out warm, as if someone had been holding it. She tried the old words written on the back in faded ink. Nothing. She tried asking politely. The figure stayed still, and the crescent moon on the banner stayed dull.

At closing she gave up, put the kettle on and propped the card against the sugar tin. Outside, the gulls had stopped pretending to fly. Then she noticed the cupped hands held no light at all. The bowl was empty, and it had been waiting to be filled. She wet her thumb in the kettle's last inch of water and pressed it gently to the teardrop mark on the figure's brow, feeling foolish.

Nothing happened for so long she began to wonder about the gauges. Then the board cooled under her thumb, and a single bead ran down the gold border and dropped into the moon at the foot of the banner. Above the harbour a cloud no bigger than a hand came in from the west. Ilse opened the window, shut her eyes the way the little figure did, and listened for the first drop on the sill.
