The rain had been coming sideways across the market since six, and by the time Margit rolled the last tarpaulin over the fish trays, her younger sister had already lit the paraffin heater under the stall. Ada never waited to be asked. She stood with her hair plastered flat and her boots squelching, stamping warmth back into her feet while the gulls fought over a crab claw by the bins.

Margit had sold ice for the fishmonger's next door for eleven winters, and the trick, she said, was to keep your hands cold and your heart sensible. Ada had never learned the trick. She kept grinning through the drizzle, pressing a bag of chips into Margit's wet fingers, insisting the stall needed a brighter sign. They had matching marks on their wrists from the summer they turned eighteen, two small painted sisters they had drawn together on the back of a receipt and paid a man in a caravan to copy. Margit had thought them silly then. Now she caught herself touching hers whenever the cold got into her bones.

By four o'clock the market was empty and the puddles had skinned over with a thin grey ice. Ada skated across the cobbles in her bright boots, arms out, shrieking at the lamplight. Margit waited by the till, shaking her head, until her sister slid to a stop in front of her and held out a wrist.

Margit pressed her own against it. The rain turned to sleet, and for a moment the two small figures touched, one warm and red, one pale and frosted, and neither of them shivered.
