Its face was ringed with a fine line of dots, one for each minute, and a single black hand ran straight from the centre to the rim like something loosed from a bow. Someone had tagged it in March. Nobody had claimed it since.

Dorrie always said no. She had come to suspect he did not want the watch back so much as he wanted someone to tell him it still existed.

On this Thursday she did not say no. She wound the watch with the little key she kept on a ribbon, listened to the tick settle into the quiet office, and set the hand to the true time, which the announcer read out over the tannoy at the very moment the second hand swept past the twelve.

"Found it, then," Mr Pell said from the doorway.

"Found it," she said, and slid it across the counter face up, so he could see the arrow pointing true.
