Fine line heart with cross on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of a heart sits on the back of the neck, with a vertical line and crossbar running through its right side. Two small dots appear to the left and a single drop hangs from the bottom point of the heart. The ink is uniform and the image is shown against dark hair and a teal top.

The crossroads post at the edge of Hollin Wood has three arms and a crossbeam nailed through its middle, and you have hung two lanterns on it every dusk since the spring the carrier did not come back. You carry the oil up from the mill in a stone jug, trimming each wick with your thumbnail so the flame sits low and steady, because the carters say a high flame makes the trees look like men.

The village laughs at you for it, kindly enough. Mr Teague at the forge says the road is safe in daylight and the wood has never given back anything it wanted to keep. You say nothing to that. You climb the post, set the lanterns on their iron hooks, and let the light fall down the ruts towards Ashby, where the carrier's wife still stands at her gate each evening with her shawl pulled tight.
Some nights the oil runs thin and you must decide which lamp to let die. You always keep the left one bright, the one nearest the path, and let the right one gutter, because the right is where the track bends and the dark gathers thickest. One evening a single drop of oil runs down the glass and hangs from the lip, and you watch it for a long while before you wipe it away.
In October a cart comes out of the trees at full dark, its wheel shrieking, and its driver is young and shaken and very much alive. He says he followed two small lights and nothing else. You do not tell him which lamp you trust. You take the reins and lead him home, and when you walk back alone the post is standing where it always stood, and someone has scratched a small heart into the wood at its foot, a cross driven through it, as if to say the road has been seen.
