Maud Pellow had kept the lamp lit in the kitchen since Martinmas, because the sun had not come over the ridge for nine days and the hens had stopped laying. She sat with her chin on her palm and watched the frost climb the window in ferns. Her mother had kept a round brass dish on the sill, polished until it held the light like a coin, and when old folk came to the door asking for warmth they were given a sip of cider and the dish was turned toward them.

On the tenth morning a thin man came up the lane with a sack on his back and no boots. He said he had walked from the orchard at the bottom of the valley, where the trees had flowered in the middle of January. Maud asked why he had come. He said the blossom was white as milk and would not fall, and the orchard wanted its sun back. He had been sent to fetch the brass dish, since it was known that whoever held the light could call the sun down.
Maud did not believe him, but she was tired of frost, so she wrapped the dish in a shawl and went down the lane with him. At the orchard every branch was heavy with blossom and not one petal had dropped. The grass beneath was yellow as butter. She understood then that the trees had been waiting for someone to ask them what they wanted. She set the dish on a stump in the middle of the orchard, sat beside it, rested her chin on her hand, and waited.
The sun came up over the ridge at noon, slow and orange, and poured into the dish until the whole orchard shone. The petals loosened and drifted down into her lap. When she walked home the lane was green, and the thin man was never seen again, though every spring after, the apple trees over the Pellow ground bloomed a week early.
