Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated black cat silhouette with a curled tail and a small crown-like shape above its head sits on the upper arm. A small black fleur-de-lis sits to its left, with fine outlines and solid black fill. The photograph is taken from the side against a warm orange-brown background, with the person's face out of frame.

Your cat was called Mr Ruskin. He lived under the science block, was never officially allowed, and was the only thing at Harrow Lane that every year group agreed on. In the summer of the fourth form he sat on the bench at prize-giving, dead centre during the Chair of Governors' speech, wearing a crown Hettie Bloom had cut from a cereal packet. He did not flinch at the applause. He simply stared at the Chair until the man lost his place.
Dougie wants a vote on renaming the trophy after him. Hettie has brought the original crown, flattened inside a sandwich bag, and holds it up like evidence. Someone asks who fed the cat over the holidays. Heads turn towards you, and you realise you are the only one who knows he never slept under the science block at all, but in the back of the caretaker's van, which is still parked outside, rusting exactly where it was.
