Avocado and pineapple tattoos on forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows an avocado sliced open, with the stone shaded in stippled dotwork and the skin edges drawn in clean outline. The right panel shows a pineapple in a single black outline, with spiky leaves and a diamond scale pattern across the fruit. Both tattoos are in black ink on what looks like the forearm, with plain skin around them.

Dear Dev, the lift in Harrow House has been out since Tuesday, so I have been climbing fourteen floors with the shopping like a pilgrim. Mr Okafor has taken to selling fruit from a folding table by the bins, and last week he let me have a pineapple for a pound because the leaves had started to brown. I carried it up in a carrier bag against my hip, and the scales of it pressed through the plastic like a row of tiny windows.

The avocado came in the same bag. He said it was ready tonight, which is his way of saying it won't keep. I cut it open on the balcony rail with the knife you left behind, and the stone slipped out whole and heavy, the colour of wet slate. I kept it. I couldn't tell you why. It sits on the windowsill now beside the pineapple crown I've been trying to root in a jam jar, and between them they look like the only settled things on this estate.
Last night the power dipped and I sat in the dark while the fridge wound down. Through the window I could see the whole block lit in squares, dozens of kitchens, each one somebody's bit of fruit going soft. I thought about you driving the van up the M1 with the Christmas lights still taped to the dashboard, and I found I didn't mind the dark so much.
The jar has roots now, two white threads like hairs. I'm enclosing a drawing of the stone, since you always said I could never draw anything that wasn't already a fruit. Keep your eye on the road. Love, Maureen.
