Two pineapple tattoos on forearms

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs sit side by side, each showing a pineapple tattoo on a forearm. The left example uses fine linework and soft grey shading with stippled dots on the scales, while the right example has a solid black crown and a dense geometric pattern filling the fruit. Both designs are rendered in black and grey ink against plain skin.

The brass pineapple on the desk at Ward 7 had been there since the spring, and Ruth touched its crown every time she came on at ten. Nobody could say who had left it. Sister Abney claimed a surgeon had brought it back from Jamaica and forgotten to collect it, which was the kind of story people told at four in the morning, when the corridor lights dimmed to amber and the trolleys stopped rattling.

Desmond, the night porter, was the one who knew things. He had worked the lifts for thirty years and said that in his grandmother's day, a pineapple on a gatepost meant the door was open and the bed was made. Sailors had carried them home as a sign that a stranger would be fed under that roof. "Nobody puts one out for visitors any more," he said, folding a blanket with the care of a man who had folded a thousand. "Shame, that."

So on the night the storm knocked the power out in the east wing, Ruth turned the pineapple to face the doors at the end of the corridor. She didn't tell anyone why. When the generator kicked in at half past two, a young woman came through those doors carrying a baby wrapped in a damp coat, asking for the maternity unit that had been moved downstairs. Ruth walked her there herself, past the dark rooms and the humming machines.

At dawn Ruth went back to the desk. The pineapple still faced the doors, and its crown caught the first grey light from the window. She left it that way for the day shift to find.
