The ribbon on the back gate, the one gone grey in the weather, Ida tied it there the spring her brother came home across the water with one good leg and a tin of letters. Pink thread for the mornings, blue for the nights, she said, because that was how long the waiting had been, and neither colour would let the other go.

Nobody believed the ribbon would hold. The wind off the estuary tried it every March. But Ida went out each dawn with her shears and a pot of ink she'd bought from a travelling clerk, and she drew the long black stroke along the path, one pull of the brush from the gatepost to the water butt, without lifting it once. The clerk had told her a stroke like that could not be taken back, only went on being true or false. She laughed at him and took the ink anyway.

Her brother never walked the path. He came as far as the gate and stood with his hand on the wood, reading the black line the way you'd read a man's handwriting, slow, looking for a tremor. There was none. Ida had held the brush steady for three weeks running.

So that's the trick of it, my dear. Pink and blue, a loop that comes back to itself, and one line that goes on whether anyone's watching or not. Now hand me that trowel, and tell Margaret I said her sweet peas are ready.
