You clock off at seven in the morning, but at three you are still the only one on Ward 7 who knows where the spare blood pressure cuffs are kept. The corridor lights are dimmed to a tired amber, and the vending machine by the lifts hums as if it has a secret. Somebody has left a pencil case on the nurses' station, zipped shut, with a white cat stuck to the front. Its head is a plain outline with no mouth, a black dot for an eye and a wink line on the other side, and above its ears sits a bow in leopard spots, pink where it should be brown.

Nobody claims it. Bev from days says it belongs to the child in bed four who drew on everything, but that child went home on Tuesday with a rabbit that breathes. You open the case for a biro and find a list in careful capitals: MILK, BATTERIES, RING MUM. Underneath, in smaller writing, DON'T FORGET THE BOW. You are not sure whether the list is someone's shopping or a rule for a whole life. You put the biro back and close the zip gently, the way you would settle a blanket over someone who has finally drifted off.

At five the porter comes up with the morning post and asks if you have seen his keys. You haven't. He looks at the pencil case, then at you, and says the cat has been winking at him since midnight. You tell him that is what happens on nights. He laughs, and then he is gone, and the lift doors close on his thin reflection.

At six the window goes grey. You put the case in the lost property cupboard and label it with the date and the words small cat, pink bow, wink. Then you stand there a moment longer, because the cat is still winking from the shelf, and you find you are winking back.
