Nobody in Skegness expected a hen party on a wet Tuesday, so when the coach from Nottingham wheezed into the front at half eleven, Sheila Pargeter put down her tea towel and reached for the spare glasses. Eleven women tumbled off the step, gold lettering on their wrists, and the bride came last, veil wound round her head like a bandage, shouting that she had been lost since Mablethorpe.

Her sister Lorna said the bride had wandered off somewhere between the chippy and the pier, and would Sheila mind keeping an eye out. Sheila said she had kept an eye out on the whole of Lumley Road since 1987 and could manage one bride. Then she looked at the wrist of the nearest hen, read the small black print, and thirty years of pulling pints took over. The instruction was plain. If you were lost, you got a drink.

She poured a half of bitter, carried it out on a tray past the amusements, and found Jade Ferriby sat on the sea wall with her shoes in one hand, feeding chips to a gull that had clearly been waiting all night. "I'm not lost," Jade said, reading Sheila's face. "I'm waiting to be bought a drink." "Then you're in luck, love. I'm the only one who's read the sticker." Sheila set the glass on the wall between them.

They sat until the tide turned, Jade telling her about a man called Gavin who had booked the wrong hotel, and Sheila pretending not to know the same story from her own wedding. When the coach finally gathered them, Sheila wrote the round on a beer mat in biro, four pounds ten, and pressed it into the bride's palm. "Keep count," she said. "That's the one thing the sticker didn't mention."
