Nobody at the lost property office at Leeds station is paid to be delighted, but I was by Thursday's coat. It came in off the last train from Harrogate, black sequins, slung over a seat, and I'd have binned it if it hadn't had a card safety-pinned inside the collar. Pink and black lettering: Emme's bachelorette party, if found please buy me a drink. Someone had even printed two little lips in the corner, one plum, one red, as if the card had blown a kiss on its way out.

Kath on the front desk laughed until she snorted. We rang the number on the back, which belonged to a florist called Dee. Dee explained that Emme had lost her sash, her tiara and her dignity somewhere between a gin bar and a kebab shop, and was now asleep on a sofa. The coat, it turned out, was her mum's, and that was the only thing she had cared about.

So on Saturday I took the 13.02 to Harrogate with the coat over my arm and a bottle of prosecco in my bag, feeling like a fairy godmother with a parking ticket. The door opened on a hallway full of deflating balloons. I held out the card. Emme read it, went very quiet, then laughed until she had to sit down on the bottom stair.

I asked whether she still fancied that drink. She said the wedding was in three weeks and she'd rather have the prosecco, thanks. We opened it on the doorstep with the coat folded between us, and I've never been so glad to be found.
