Bachelorette party quote on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist with a text design in mostly black serif and script lettering, with the name line in pink. Two small lip motifs, one purple and one red, sit between the lines. The lettering is crisp and centred on the inner wrist against a soft, out-of-focus background of gold foil ribbon.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy Gaunt had run the Anchor and Lamp on Tollesbury Quay for thirty-one years, and in all that time she had never bought a round for a stranger who asked nicely. So when a hen party of seven came in off the sea wall on a wet Saturday, sashes sodden and tinsel dripping, she was ready to refuse them. Then the one at the front shoved her left wrist across the bar like a ticket.

"Read it," she said, and laughed before Dorothy could.

Dorothy read it. I belong with Emme's bachelorette party. If found, please buy me a drink. Two small lips sat between the lines, one plum and one tomato red, like kisses left on a ledger. "Who's Emme?" she asked. "The one in the veil, about to marry a man who sells outboard engines," the girl said. "Nobody here knows who I am. That's the rule."

Dorothy poured a double gin with lime and set it down. The bride was reeling near the fruit machine, veil skewed, bellowing at the jukebox. Dorothy looked at the smudged ink on the girl's wrist and thought of Derek writing his number on her palm in biro in 1979, how it had lasted precisely until the washing up. Nobody had ever asked her to be found.

They left at closing time in a clatter of heels and a taxi that had been waiting too long. Under the empty glass, Dorothy found a paper napkin printed with a red lip mark and four words in eyeliner: Found you, landlady. She pinned it above the till, beside the lifeboat photograph and the health certificate, and left the gin tap running a little longer than she needed to.
