A close photograph of a temporary tattoo applied to the inner wrist, showing a printed message in navy serif and red script. The text reads I'm With Erin's Bachelorette Party, followed by If I'm Lost, Please Buy Me A Drink, with a red lipstick kiss mark on the right. The design is set on a pale background with even lighting and a plain, clean composition.

Dear Brother Anselm, I write from the brewhouse with flour still on my sleeves, as you asked me to report any unusual callers at the gate, and I have one to report, a whole party of them. On Thursday, just after Vespers, twelve women in pink sashes came stumbling up the lane from the Ashby road, singing a song I did not recognise and suspect was unfit for the chapter house.

The bride-to-be, Erin, had a message inked across her wrist in navy letters: I'm with Erin's bachelorette party. Beneath it, in a smaller hand, were the words If I'm lost, please buy me a drink. Brother Columba read it aloud twice before he understood it was a request and not a bishop's decree. The party had lost their coach, their phones and, by the look of them, their sense of direction, but they had not lost their thirst.
Brother Columba poured them four measures of our dark ale in the guest parlour, and they toasted the bride with such noise that the goats bolted from the orchard. The one with the wrist message told me, with great seriousness, that the monastery was the most authentic thing that had happened all weekend. I did not argue. She pressed a red kiss onto the corner of my ledger, which I have since tried to scrub away with lye, without success.
They left at dusk with a map drawn on the back of a beer mat and a promise to send us a photograph of the bride in a borrowed habit. Brother Columba says the vats will forgive them. I have decided that I shall not, but I have also decided to leave the ledger as it is. Your servant in Christ, Brother Ignatius.
