Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A handwritten script rendering of the word balance in black ink on a plain white background. The letters have tapered, brush-like strokes with thicker downstrokes and fine connecting lines. The image is a flat drawing with no skin or body visible, and the composition is centred with generous white space around the word.

The stone wall at the end of the quay had been wet all week, and Marguerite had stopped pretending the gulls were a nuisance. She sat with the crate of pears between her knees and watched the ferry come round the headland, low in the water, its single lamp still lit though the sun was up. Her brother Tomas was on it. He had written from the mainland that the boat would come in on the high tide, and that he would bring the scales, the brass ones with the lopsided pan, because she had never once trusted the market weights.

When the gangway came down he was carrying a canvas bag and a sack of dried beans, and he looked thinner than she remembered, though she knew she looked worse. He set the bag at her feet and took the pears off her lap one by one, holding each up to the light as if checking it for bruises. Then he lifted the scales out and hung them from the iron hook beside the door of the shed, and they swung there, the two pans rocking, settling, rocking again.
"You never let it rest," she said.
"That's the point," Tomas said. "Watch. It has to stop on its own."
They stood together and waited. The pans slowed, their brass catching the grey morning, and at last they hung level, neither side winning. Marguerite laughed, which surprised her, and the sound went out over the water after the ferry. Tomas put a hand on her shoulder and left it there, and neither of them mentioned the empty chair in the kitchen or the letter that had not come.
