A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Madame Viviane had been sitting on the good cushion since breakfast, and the kittens had been told twice not to climb the curtains. Bijou, the smallest, in the pink bow tie, had climbed them anyway. Now he hung from the hem like a bell rope, mewing for someone to come and be impressed.

"Gaspard," she said, without looking up from her pearls, "your son is decorating the drawing room." Gaspard, who had come in through the window smelling of rain and the rooftops opposite, sat down heavily beside her. He had a torn ear and the face of a satisfied landlord. "He is practising," he said. "Every cat in this city learned to climb by falling off something." "Every cat in this city did not have to be unhooked by the concierge," said Madame Viviane. Ninette, in her teal bow, wandered across the rug with a loose button in her mouth and dropped it at Gaspard's paw as though it were a gift from the Emperor.

That evening the rain drummed on the zinc roofs. Boots came up the stairs, then stopped on the landing. Madame Viviane lifted her head, and the three kittens, who had been rolling in a tangle of wool, went still together. "The hatbox," she whispered, which was unnecessary, since they were already moving. Ninette went first, then Pip with his grey tail flicking, then Bijou, who sulked about the crumpled bow until he was inside.

Gaspard stayed by the door with his tail low and his chest out. When the knock came he met it with a long, offended yowl that filled the whole stairwell, and the boots went away again, muttering about the cats on the third floor. Inside the box, three small heads settled on one another. Madame Viviane lowered the lid, smoothed her hat, and returned to her cushion as if nothing had ever been on the curtains at all.
