Colourful watercolour-style tattoo of the cartoon character Stitch, with blue body, pink ears and black linework, on the outer thigh.

Stitch character on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon alien character, Stitch, sits with arms raised and mouth open, showing small teeth and a pink tongue. Bold black outlines and soft blue shading define the figure, while loose pink and blue washes spread behind it and splash across the skin. The colour ink dominates the composition, which is centred on the thigh with the skin edges visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The blue thing came out of the larch wood the week after Mrs Pennock buried her husband, and it did not seem to know it was supposed to be sad. I found it sitting on the stile by the lych gate with a tin of my mother's shortbread open in its lap, licking its fingers. Its ears went up like two wet sails when it saw me. It wore a brass tag on a string round its neck, engraved with a lopsided star and nothing I could read.

Nobody in Hale Ashby believed me. Dad said foxes, the Vicar said a trick of the light, and Gwen at the shop said it was the cider her brother had been brewing in the old pig shed. But the washing kept going missing off the line, one sock at a time, and each morning there would be a sock hung neatly on the fence post, sometimes two, sometimes a teaspoon balanced on top like a flag.

I went up into the wood one evening with a bowl of milk and sat on a root until dusk. It came down the bank on all fours, grinning with too many small teeth, and it did not drink the milk. It pushed the bowl back at me with one enormous foot, then pointed, very seriously, at the hill where the summer fair lanterns had blown away in the spring gale and never been found.

We climbed there together, the creature and I, and found them snagged in the ash trees, dozens of them, each one still faintly glowing. I took down the one with my name painted on its side. The blue thing chose the one with the gold star and tucked it under its arm like a prize. When I got home the line was full again, and every sock was dry.
