Barbed wire band on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black barbed wire design wraps around the inner wrist in a single band, with the barbs angled outward along the wire. The linework is bold and solid with no shading, and the ink is uniformly dark against the skin. Two sheets of the same design on white backing sit at the left and right edges of the frame, suggesting the tattoo may be temporary.

Nell had the last coil of wire over her shoulder when the vicar's boy came up the lane on his bicycle, ringing his bell at every gate. She didn't look up. Mr Pargeter's rabbits had been through the beans again, and the council had said the fence was her business, not theirs.

The posts were ash, cut from the hedge the winter before and left to season against the shed. She drove each one in with the club hammer, counting under her breath, and wound the wire round the top rail the way her father had shown her, twisting the spurs out at a slant so nothing could push through without tearing its coat. The barbs caught the light and threw small dark shadows across the sorrel.
By noon the bed was fenced on three sides. Pargeter came down to watch from behind his hedge, arms folded, saying wire was a cruel thing to put in a garden. Nell worked a spur loose from her glove and said the rabbits had been crueller to the lettuces.
He went away. She stayed until the sun was low, walking the line with her palm held just above the wire, feeling for give. There was none. Tomorrow she would plant the leeks along the fence where nothing could reach them, and on the far side the rabbits would sit in the long grass, looking at the beans through the spikes, and never once think to go round.
