Baseball rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A rose is shown in close up, with its petals formed from white and grey leather panels edged with red stitching, as on a baseball. The shading is smooth and highly realistic, with glossy highlights on the red petals and soft blue shadows behind the bloom. The rose fills most of the frame against a plain black background.

The pass was closed by snow by the time Ruth reached the hut, so she sat on her rucksack and unpicked the old ball in her lap. Her father had sent it from Ohio with a note that said only, keep it dry. The cover had gone soft at the seams, the red thread faded to the colour of wine left out overnight, and when she pressed her thumb into the leather it gave like a cheek.

Inside the hut a stove ticked. The keeper, a broad man called Anselm who had never once asked her why she was walking in February, handed her a mug and watched her work. She cut the stitching with the small curved blade her father had given her when she was nine, and laid the four panels out on the table in the order she had learned, the way you might lay out a hand of cards you already knew you would lose.
She had meant to make a ball again. Instead her fingers kept folding the panels inward, one lip over another, until the red cover curled into a cup and the white leather turned back on itself like the edge of a petal. Anselm grunted. Outside, the wind dropped all at once, and the light off the snow came blue through the window.
She stitched the last loop as the sun went down behind the ridge. When she held it up, the red thread ran in a spiral to the centre, tight as the first ball her father ever made her, and the bloom looked up at her from her palm, ready to be carried down the far side of the mountain.
