Matching cat hearts on two forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two forearms rest side by side, each carrying a heart-shaped tattoo framed by a yellow scalloped border. The left heart shows an orange cat with blue eyes beside pink flowers, and the right shows a grey tabby cat wearing glasses against a pink floral background. Bold dark outlines and flat, solid fills in pink, yellow, orange and grey give the pieces a classic look, and the photo is taken straight on with soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The vet in Thornbury said the grey tom would lose his sight by Michaelmas unless someone kept the glare off him, so Mr Pruett bought him a pair of spectacles from the chemist's window, the wire-rimmed kind his late wife had used for her knitting patterns. Nobody in Thornbury thought it odd. It was the summer of the coronation tea parties, and half the village had a cat that could read the Echo better than its owner.

My orange queen, Bramble, had no need of spectacles and never let me forget it. She sat on the Co-op wall every afternoon with her tail wrapped round her feet, looking down her nose at the tom as he came up the high street, peering over his glasses like a magistrate. I painted hearts for a living that year, on the backs of pub signs and the shutters of the butcher's, and when Mr Pruett asked me to do one for his cat I said yes before he had finished the sentence. I gave Bramble a heart as well, so she wouldn't sulk.

We did them on the same afternoon, at my mother's kitchen table, with the window open and the wireless playing dance music. I used the pink for the flowers and the yellow for the scallops, and I drew the cats looking straight out at you, as though they were about to say something rude. When I finished Mr Pruett's, he held his arm up to the light and said the tom had been waiting all his life to be painted.

Bramble's went on the other side of the table, and somewhere between the scallops and the little blue eyes I decided they ought to sit beside each other. So that is how I left them, side by side on the Co-op wall, one orange and one grey, the spectacles catching the sun.
