Fine line black tattoo of a flower wreath around the words Be Kind to yourself and a small heart, on the inner wrist.

Be Kind to Yourself wreath on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo on the inner wrist shows a circular wreath of simple, open flower shapes enclosing the words Be Kind in bold hand-lettered script, with to yourself in smaller lettering beneath and a tiny heart below. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink reads as dark brown-black on pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame, with a blurred pink and white background behind the hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo's hands were never still, even on the Thursday she had finished the last of the wreaths for the church fête. Dorota, who had been sweeping wilted stock off the back step since seven, counted eleven flower heads on the bench, daisies wired into rings, and asked why there was a twelfth lying on its side with a bent petal.

"That one's mine," Mrs Okonedo said. "I ruined it the first time. Too tight. You squeeze a thing trying to hold it together and it goes brown at the edges."

She turned the wreath over and showed Dorota where she had tucked a card under the ribbon, the handwriting so careful it looked printed. Be kind to yourself, it said, and beneath that, in smaller letters, a tiny heart like a full stop.

"Who's it for?"

"Nobody, now. I was going to post it to my sister in Leeds. She fell out with me in March and we haven't spoken since." She rewound the florist's tape around her thumb. "I wrote that card for me, in the end. Took me a fortnight to realise."

Dorota fetched the spray bottle and misted the daisies without being asked. The shop smelled of wet green stems, and the radio was murmuring about rain over the Pennines. Outside, the pavement was going dark. She hung the twelfth wreath on the hook by the door, the bent petal facing the street, and left it there for whoever came in next.
