Belle in a stained glass frame on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Belle in a yellow ball gown beside a red-caped Beast figure, set within a round stained glass style frame with roses and small medallions. Bold black outlines define the panels and figures, with soft yellow, gold, amber and red shading. The design fills the outer thigh and is shown in three side by side photographs taken from slightly different angles.

Dear Father, the window in the saloon came out again on Tuesday, the one with the rose in the top corner. I have spent three evenings with the lead came and the grozing iron trying to coax it back. You will say I should have sent it to Whitcombe's, but they would charge by the pane and melt the amber out of it. Besides, the lock keeper's wife watched me work and said nobody else on the cut would know which yellow to use.

The hard part was the gown. It is one great pale sheet of glass that wants to look like candlelight and not like a lemon, and I went through four offcuts before the light through the cabin door made it right. The cape was simpler, a ruby that goes almost brown at the hem. I cut the beast's shoulder from the old red panel and set it beside her hand, because that is where it sat before the frost cracked it. The leading only wants them there because that is how the old pattern was drawn.

Last night I set the final medallion in the lower border, the little gold one with the broken wheel, and sat up with the lamp lit so the window would catch it. From the towpath the whole frame glows like a chapel at dusk. Mr Abara from the narrowboat behind us came out in his dressing gown to ask whether there was a service on. I told him only a repair, and he said that was the same thing in a town without a steeple.

Come home by Friday if the locks let you. The window will hold until the spring floods, and I have left the lamp in it so you can find the boat from the bridge.
