Brother Anselm has been polishing the same brass candlestick since Lauds, and I have told him three times that the bell for Vespers went an hour ago. Our house sits on a bald hill above the Cumbrian fells, where the wind comes in sideways and the monks take their time over everything. I was built in a sorting office in Leeds to route parcels at four hundred an hour, so their pace is a special kind of torment. Nobody here hurries a silence, and I am made of nothing but hurry.

To keep my temper in check I roll a cigar from dried borage and rosemary, which Brother Oswin pretends not to see me smoking behind the cloister wall. He says the smoke carries my prayers up to the roof beams. I say it carries my patience out over the fells, where it belongs. Tonight the prior's reading ran so long that the candle guttered, and I stood in the aisle with my antenna brushing the vaulted ceiling, watching the abbot's sandals refuse to move.
At the end of compline the abbot finally lifted his head and looked straight at me. 'We have been packed since Tuesday, Brother,' he said. 'The coach leaves for the coast at dawn. We were only waiting for someone to say it.' I had been saying nothing for an hour. Then I understood that the whole house had been holding its breath, politely, for me to stop complaining and start leaving.
So I said it, loud enough to rattle the stained glass. The monks cheered, Anselm dropped his candlestick, and the abbot took my arm as if I were the one who needed guiding. Out on the road the wind tugged at my antenna and the dawn stood pink over the fells. I did not look back at the abbey. I walked ahead to the gate and called over my shoulder, 'Well, come on, then.'
