Brother Osric had been given the cellar keys because nobody else wanted them, and so it was he who found the little yellow man under the barrels of last year's perry. He was a square fellow, all shoulders and no neck, with a face like a dinner plate and a smile that never moved. Osric wiped the dust off his head with his sleeve and set him on the shelf beside the candles.

The abbot said toys were for children and for the village over the hill, and that a monastery had no use for things that could not kneel. So the figure was put in the window of the scriptorium, where the sun came through at noon and warmed the glaze. The brothers copied their psalms and glanced at him between lines. Nobody could say why the work went easier with him watching. The ink dried faster, the vellum stayed flat, and old Brother Tobin, who had not laughed since the flood, was seen one Thursday standing at the window with his hands behind his back, grinning at a lump of plastic.

Then came the winter the bell cracked. The abbot sent for the smith, the smith sent word that the metal was too cold to pour, and the bell stayed silent through the feast. The brothers grew thin and quiet. On the eve of the feast Osric went to the window and found the figure had been turned to face the door, his arms held wide as if to catch someone coming in.

They say the abbot took it as a sign and let the brothers keep the figure in the refectory after that. They say too that nobody ever again sat down to supper without first looking at him, and that somebody always laughed.
