Bicycle wheel with roses and orchid
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil or ink drawing of a tattoo design shows a bicycle wheel with a world map visible through its spokes. Roses, an orchid and feathers wrap around the upper left and right, with a bead and chain detail hanging from the lower edge. The shading is fine and detailed, with soft greys and dark accents, and the design is centred on a plain white sheet.

The chain on Marguerite's old Raleigh had snapped twice that week, and each time Dev had fixed it on the kerb outside the bakery while she held his cup of tea. By Thursday he had stopped pretending the bike was the problem. Her wheel was the problem, or rather the spokes, which had gone out of true somewhere between Lisbon and Porto and never quite come back.

"Give it here," he said, and she did, though she had carried that machine across three borders and a flooded stretch of Provence without anyone touching it but her. He spun the rear wheel slowly and watched the rim wobble past the brake block like a tired eye. Somewhere a bell rang, and a woman with a basket of oranges laughed at something on the far side of the square.
"You know what your grandfather used to say," Dev said. "A wheel only needs to be true at the hub. The rest is just the world going round it."
Marguerite took the spanner from his hand. She had heard the line before, at the age of nine, from a man with grease to his elbows in a shed in Kent, and she had never once believed it. She tightened the nipple on the third spoke and listened to the note change.
When she finally clipped the chain back on, she left a single black bead threaded through the links, the way her grandfather had always done for luck. Dev asked why. She shrugged and pushed off down the hill, the orchid of the afternoon light blooming pink on the cobbles behind her, and did not look back to see whether he had understood.
