Rose cluster on the top of a foot

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of two large roses with layered, shaded petals and a few smaller leaf shapes sits on the top of a bare foot. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with soft grey shading inside the petals to give them depth. The image is in warm, low-light tones with a blurred carpeted floor and a fan in the background.

"Hold the stock steady, Ruth, or the bud will slide off before the tape goes on." Harold said it without looking up from the bench, the way he had said it for thirty years, and she held the stock steady.

The nursery sat at the bottom of Cold Harbour Lane, where the wind off the Wash found every gap in the hedge. Two roses had been left in the back bed by the old owner, a crimson and a blush, both gone leggy and sick with black spot. Harold said neither could be saved. So he took a bud from each, set them one above the other on a single rootstock, and bound them with raffia that smelled of the shed.

All winter the graft looked like nothing. Ruth watered it, swore at the greenfly and wrote the date on a card for the ledger. In March a green knuckle split, then a second, and by May the rootstock was carrying two heads of bloom, the crimson folded tight beneath the blush like one hand holding another.

Harold did not live to see it open. In June Ruth sold the plant to a woman who came in off the coast road with a photograph of her father's trawler and asked for a rose that had been through something and bloomed anyway. Ruth told her it was called Two Hands. She did not know if that was true. She wrote it on the card regardless, and the card went into the ledger with the others.
