Thin black ankle tattoo above glitter heels
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Close view of crossed legs in pink and silver glitter platform stiletto heels on a white bed. A thin black linework tattoo wraps around one ankle and includes a small motif. The ink is black against the skin, and the glitter shoes add multicoloured sparkle to the frame.

The heel had gone clean through at the collar, and the pair of pink glitter platforms lay on my bench like something that had dropped off a fairground carousel. Ruth had rung on Tuesday to say they'd been her mother's idea of a good shoe, and that she'd counted every flake on them twice before she came in, because counting was what she did when she was nervous. I switched on the lamp and let the glitter take the light. It threw little coloured coins across the walls of the shop, pink, then silver, then a green I hadn't expected.

I cut a new steel shank and bedded it in resin, then built the platform back up with thin strips of leather, working slowly so the glue could grip. The glitter sat on a stiff backing that wanted to crack if I bent it too far, so I kept the stitching tight and low. When I finished, I found a single black thread caught in the seam, fine as a hair and curled like a question mark. I left it where it was. It seemed to belong there.
Ruth came back on Saturday, just as the bell over the door was giving up its last rattle. She put the shoes on at the counter, stood up, and walked the length of the shop without looking down once. At the end she turned and asked whether they'd hold on a dance floor. I told her heels hold if you respect the ground under them, and she laughed and said she was catching the Monday bus to Bristol, and wanted them to carry her out of town, not back into it.
On Monday morning I found a sequin on the step outside, silver and no bigger than a fingernail, and I picked it up and turned it over in the grey light. Somewhere past the Hull road the bus would be climbing the hill, and I like to think she felt the new shank settle under her weight.
