Black cartoon cat with a bow outline
Black and grey · Flash
A simple cartoon cat with a large round head, big round eyes, a small mouth, whiskers and a bow on one ear is drawn in white outline on a solid black background. The linework is bold and uniform, with small jagged strokes suggesting fur at the ears, tail and chest, and the cat is filled in black so only its edges show. The composition is centred and there is no colour apart from the white and black.

Pass the gravy down to Desmond before he starts on the ring again, because I'm the only one at this table who saw the cat do it. Kettering church hall, nineteen fifty-two, and a bride who had been promised a quiet morning. Mavis kept a black cat called Pudding, round as a pudding basin and with the cheek of a bishop, and that cat had decided the safest place for anything valuable was under her chest.

Pudding wore a white ribbon bow on one ear, tied on by the bride's youngest sister, and she wore it the way a magistrate wears a wig. Nobody dared take it off her. When the vicar turned to ask for the rings, the best man patted his waistcoat and found nothing but a loose thread. Then the cat came strolling up the aisle, bow high, tail curled like a question mark, and sat square on the velvet cushion as though she'd been booked for the occasion.
Everyone laughed except the groom, who had a face like a dropped pie. He knelt down slowly. Pudding looked at him, looked at the cushion, then lifted one paw and let both rings roll out from under her chest onto the floor. She had been keeping them warm, that was all. Mavis swore ever after that she'd known it all along, and I believe her, because that cat only ever sat on the things she was minding.
So if you're ever getting married and someone offers you a cushion with a cat on it, check what she's sitting on. Now, who's having the trifle, and who's going to tell Desmond the cat was never in the soup?
