Dear Mother Superior of the Abbey of St Ursula, I write from the wreck of Kittiwake Castle, where the tide has finally got into the scullery and the gulls have taken over the kitchen. You will be pleased to hear I have not drowned, though Captain Fenwick has lost a boot and most of his dignity. We are a crew of nine now, which is four fewer than when we sailed from Whitby, and the rest of us are living on dried mackerel and the sour wine we found in the cellar.

The matter of my eye I must explain before you hear it from the village. On the night of the storm I was on the battlements with a lantern, and a wave threw a fistful of sea across the walls and straight into my face. The salt burned like a hot coal. Mistress Pell, who keeps our cook pot and our opinions, cut a patch from a velvet curtain and stitched it into a heart, because she said a pirate ought to have something to show for himself even when half blind. I think she was laughing at me. I wear it anyway, and the men have stopped making jokes about it, mostly because I have threatened to make them walk the parapet.

The ship is still sound at the harbour mouth, though the mast is cracked. If the weather holds, we sail on the evening tide for the south coast with whatever silver the cellars still hold. Pray for us, Mother, and tell Sister Agnes that her cat has not been seen since Tuesday and is almost certainly the one currently stealing our biscuit.
