Black cat on a crescent moon with flowers
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A black cat sits on a grey crescent moon wrapped in curling black vines, with three pink five-petalled flowers and small green leaves along the arc. Small black sparkles are scattered around the design. The linework is fine and black, with soft grey wash shading on the moon and touches of pink and green colour on the flowers and leaves.

Her name was Vine, though nobody on the estate had given it her. She had come up from the bins with a crescent of white fur on her chest and a way of sitting on the railing as if she owned the moon behind it. The children said she carried wishes in her whiskers. Old Tomasz on the sixth floor said she was only hungry.
One February the council men came with a clipboard and a van, and the tower was to be emptied by spring. Mrs Okonkwo packed her tins and her photographs into cardboard boxes. On the last night the cat sat on the railing, tail curled round her feet, and watched the moon until it slid down behind the car park. Then she jumped, and where she landed, wild flowers pushed up through the cracked concrete, pink as the inside of a shell, with green leaves curling after them.
Years later a boy from the new flats found the flowers at the foot of the old tower and fetched his mum to see. They stood among them a long while without speaking. Every spring after, somebody on the new estate set a saucer of milk by the railings, and nobody could say who it was for.
