Black cat over a forest scene on thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black cat with green eyes sits in profile, and its body forms a rounded frame that contains a sketched forest of tall, bare trees, a small wooden cabin and a pale figure among the branches. The linework is fine and hatched, with dense black fills on the cat and dark tree trunks, and softer grey shading in the background. The design is in black and grey apart from the green eyes, and it is centred on the thigh with another tattoo of trees partly visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Hollin Dale walked the woods after dark without asking Mrs Pardoe's cat for leave, and nobody remembered who had first started the asking. The cat was black as a boot heel, with eyes the colour of new bracken, and it sat on the stile at the edge of the trees as if the parish had left it there to keep count.

Tilly Ashdown came up the lane the winter her father's chest gave out, carrying a lantern and a pound of tea wrapped in brown paper. The cat watched her pass. She said good evening to it out of manners, and it blinked once, slowly, which her father had always said meant yes.

Her father's cabin stood where the birches thinned into oak, a hut of grey planks with a crooked chimney, and every night she lit the stove and listened for claws scratching at the door. Some nights they came. Some nights she heard a second sound beneath them, a thin voice like a reed bent in wind, calling her name from among the trunks. Her father had said the wood kept its own debts. She had never asked what he owed.

In March she found the pale shape waiting on the path, a woman with her hair unbound and her hands folded over nothing. The cat had never been keeping the wood out of the village. It had been keeping her in. Tilly set the lantern down, unlatched the gate and stepped aside, and the black cat rose, stretched, and walked into the trees ahead of the figure with its tail held high, as though showing her the road home.
