Line-drawn cat on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single unbroken black outline shows a cat seen from behind, with pointed ears, a curved back and a tail that loops at the bottom. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The tattoo is centred on pale skin against a light grey bedsheet, with the foot and a dark trouser hem visible around it.

The rain has been coming sideways down Brindley Street since seven, and you have sold two wire bracelets and a bird no bigger than a thimble. Your fingers are numb around the pliers. The cat arrives under the fishmonger's awning the way it does on wet Thursdays, and sits with its back to you, facing the cobbles as if it is waiting for a bus that never comes.

You have never seen its face. For a month it has sat like that, ears pricked, tail folded round its feet, and today you decide it should have something to keep. You take a single length of copper wire from the tin and, without lifting the pliers from it, bend it into shape: the point of one ear, the dip behind the skull, the long slope of a back, then the tail rising and falling and curling at the end into a small closed loop, like a question that has given up on being asked.

When you look up the awning is empty. There is only a dark patch on the flagstones, the size and shape of something that has just stood up. You pick the wire off the cloth and find it still warm from your hand, the tail loop beaded with rain.

You pack up at dusk, wrap the figure in yesterday's newspaper and leave it on the fishmonger's sill with a note weighted by a mussel shell. On Thursday the parcel is gone. In its place, caught in the bend of the tail, is a single grey hair, dry as paper, and the rain has stopped.
