Black cat silhouette with curled tail

Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a cat sitting upright and looking to the right, with its tail curling up and over on the left. The outline is filled with solid black ink with no visible shading or internal linework, apart from a small red dot marking the eye. The cat is set against warm, speckled skin in a close, centred photograph.

Don't look at me like that, I'm not the one who sold the big top. Sit down by the stove and mind the bucket, it's where the rain gets in. Nobody under sixty remembers the Vellacott Brothers' Travelling Wonder, so I'll be the one to tell it, and I'll tell it once.

There was a cat in that show called Mab, a black thing with a tail like a question mark and eyes like two struck matches. She never did a trick. Her act was to sit on the lip of the ring barrel while the lights went down and wait, upright, looking off to the right at something nobody else could see. The crowd would hush for her. Old Vellacott said she was worth three clowns and cost less than a sack of oats.

The year the money went, the brothers sold the horses to a farm outside Louth and the tent to a scrap man in Hull. Mab wouldn't go in the lorry. She sat on the step of the empty caravan for three days, tail curled round her paws, until Ada Vellacott, who had never liked anything, carried her out and set her down on the wet grass by the gate. "Go on, then," she said. "Be somebody else's wonder."

Mab didn't follow the lorry. She walked the whole length of the lane, past the chapel and the shut-up bakery, and sat in the middle of the road at the crossroads where the lamp still worked. Lorries stopped for her. Every one of them. I am told that is the only miracle the Vellacotts ever managed, and it was done by a cat who would not move.
