Black cat with roses and cross on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A black cat with green eyes sits upright, wearing a beaded necklace with a gold cross, and is framed by red roses, green leaves and small white flowers. The design uses bold dark outlines, flat fills and soft blue shading behind the foliage. It is shown in colour on a thigh, with a floral skirt at the top of the frame and no face visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat had outlasted two tyres and a dust storm, and by the third day out of Salt Hollow, Ruth had stopped waiting for it to slide off the dashboard. Her brother had wedged it there with a folded map: a black figurine with green glass eyes, a string of wooden beads looped round its neck and a small brass cross swinging against the windscreen. Every time the road dipped into a dry wash, it rocked and settled again, as steady as a churchgoer.

Tom had bought it from a market stall in Tucson for his wife's birthday, then left his wife, and the cat had come along in the glovebox by default. Ruth had meant to bury it at the turning where the roses grew, beside their mother's ashes. The roses were still there, planted in old coffee tins along the verge, red petals gone brown in the heat, leaves rattling like paper. Somebody kept replacing the dead ones. Ruth had never found out who.

At the petrol station the attendant, a broad woman with reading glasses on a chain, glanced at the dashboard and said the cat looked like it had seen some things. Ruth laughed, then didn't. She asked whether the roses were hers. The woman shrugged and said, 'Everybody out here brings something.'

That evening Ruth pulled onto the verge, knelt in the grit and set the cat between the tins, cross facing the road. When her headlights swung away, it caught the last of the light, two green eyes holding steady in the dark.
