Black chest tattoo with roses over the face

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A shirtless person stands against a bright blue background, with a bunch of pink roses and carnations covering the face and surrounding the body. A dark black-ink tattoo sits on the centre of the chest, partly below a chain necklace, and small tattoos are visible on the upper arm and forearm. The image has a pink and blue colour grade and a centred, editorial composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every Thursday the train from Carlisle stopped at Thornbeck for four minutes, and in those four minutes Mabel Rudd sold roses from a galvanised bucket on the platform. She charged a penny a stem and never took more than one from anyone who looked as though they had been crying, which is how the porter knew she had counted everyone who came through.

The young man who bought the last bunch in March wanted only one stem, and he paid with a sixpence he had carried so long the king's head had worn to a ghost. Mabel asked where he was going. He said wherever the line went. She told him the line only went one way, and he laughed and said that suited him fine, so long as the roses kept.

A letter came to the station house the following winter, addressed to the girl with the roses, postmarked from a town on the coast. Inside was a single dried stem, black at the thorns, and a card that read: the bloom held. Mabel pinned the stem above the ticket window and told nobody what it meant. The porter swore the trains ran on time for a month after, and that Mabel sold her last penny rose to the signalman's wife, who never once asked where it came from.
