Small finger tattoos with stacked rings

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest in brown hair, one dusted with orange powder and wearing two gold rings with pale and dark stones. The visible tattoos are small, with a thin outlined triangle on one finger, a wavy line with a small star on another, and a tiny mark on the other hand. The linework is simple and dark, with no shading, and the warm orange and red background contrasts with the grey-black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mirela had been sent down to the dye sheds the week the madder came in, and by the second morning her fingers had gone the colour of rust. Tobiah ran the vats with an ash stick and a grudge against anyone who wiped their hands on their apron. "Dye reads the skin," he said, tapping the orange dust dried in her knuckle creases. "Tell me where you've been."

She had been everywhere: the cart axles, the ferry rope, the fair's takings ledger with its pencil sums smudged by wet thumbs. The travelling fair had come off the barge at dawn and would be gone by Sunday, and nobody in the company wanted to be the one left behind on the wrong bank.

"Then you'll want a mark," Tobiah said. He dipped a fine brush in black ink, the kind used for showbill lettering, and drew a triangle no bigger than a barley grain on the side of her finger. "Three sides for the road, the river, and the people who keep you on it." Beside it he added a wave for the water they had crossed, and a star for the night she had chosen to stay.

On Sunday the wagons rolled out along the tow path and Mirela stood at the landing with the ledger under her arm. When she lifted her hand to wave, the ink had sunk into the grain of her skin, the wavy line running like the river, and she found she did not need anyone to tell her which bank she was on.
