Black crow on red blossom branch on chest
Japanese · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A solid black crow perches on a branch dotted with red blossoms or berries, with its head turned to the left. The bird is filled with bold black ink and has little visible linework, while the branch and flowers use red ink with darker outlines. The design is centred on the chest and sits against plain skin with a faint pale background.

Thomas Pim had the letter halfway to his lips when the crow came off the bulwark like a dropped coat. It did not snatch. It took the corner of the paper in its beak and held on, head cocked to the left, as if it were the one deciding whether the words were worth keeping. Forty-one days out of Yokohama and nobody aboard had ever fed the bird, yet it had opinions about everything.

Pim had read the letter six times already. It was from his sister in Penzance, and it said only that the widow Carne still wanted her plum trees, and that the cuttings he had carried home in wet sacking were to reach her before Lady Day, or not at all. The crow tugged. Paper tore. Pim lunged and came away with a fistful of feathers and half a signature, and the bird flapped up into the rigging and settled on the crate lashed beside the hatch, where the cuttings stood in their sacking with bruised red buds at every node.
Ruth Calloway, the cook, came up with a ladle to see what the shouting was about. She looked at the crow, the crate, and the scrap in Pim's hand, and laughed until she had to sit on the coaming. 'It's taken the one thing you were fretting over,' she said. 'Leave it be. Plum trees don't mind company.'
Pim did not answer. That evening he cut the crate open and, in the swinging lamplight, the bird watched him lift out the tallest cutting and tie it with twine to the rail. By the time they raised the Lizard, three red blossoms had opened along it, and the crow had gone quiet on the branch beside them, black as a closed book, waiting for land.
