Two feathers on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two feathers are tattooed on the inner forearm, one larger and angled upwards and one smaller and curving towards the wrist. The quills and barbs are rendered with soft, feathered black shading and fine strokes that give a delicate, realistic texture. The image is in black and grey against plain pale skin, with the feathers placed diagonally across the arm.

The barge had been drifting upriver for three days before Nell found the smaller feather caught in the mooring rope, a grey-brown thing no longer than her thumb, still stiff at the quill. Her father would have named the bird from the feather alone. She had only ever known the names his mouth made for them.

Ruth Ashby came aboard at Hambleden lock with a canvas bag and a cough that rattled like loose coal. She wanted passage to Reading and no questions. Nell gave her the cabin under the tiller and took the bag's weight without asking what it held. In the mornings the old woman sat on the roof with a penknife, trimming a longer feather she had carried from the marsh at Dorney, muttering that the wind kept getting into its barbs.
On the fourth night the feathers stopped being a matter of birds. Ruth showed her the larger one, its vane gone soft at the tip from handling, and said her husband had plucked it from a heron's leg on the morning they were wed. The smaller one, she said, had been the bird that came after. Nell did not believe in that kind of counting, but she did believe in the light off the water, and she held the pair up against the sky until the barbs fanned out like smoke.
At Reading, Ruth stepped onto the lock-side with her bag and pressed the smaller feather into Nell's palm without ceremony. Nell watched her walk away along the towpath, shoulders bent, the wind lifting the loose edge of her coat. The feather rode on her wrist all the way back downriver, so light she forgot it was there until she needed to brush it away.
