The road south of Anselm Wells ran so straight that a person could watch their own dust for an hour. Ada Penrose walked it with a canvas bag and a tin of water, because her brother had taken the truck to the coast three days earlier and had not come back. Nobody in town thought he would.

She found the first feather where the asphalt gave out to gravel, a grey-brown flight feather lying straight as a ruler. Further on she found a second, smaller and softer, caught on a mesquite and bent by the wind. She tucked both into her hat band. At the well the old woman told her that feathers on a road meant someone had gone up, not down. Ada asked whether that was the crows talking. The old woman laughed and said crows had never once been wrong about a road.

By noon the heat made the far hills shake. The feathers led her off the road to a dry wash where a hawk sat on a fence post with its wings half open, watching her come. It did not fly. It only lifted one wing, slowly, as though to show her which way the shade lay.

At the bottom of the wash her brother sat under an overhang beside a split tyre and a bottle of water, shirt torn, grinning like a fool. "You came after the feathers," he said. "Everybody does." She pulled the larger one from her hat and gave it to him, kept the smaller one for herself, and they walked home with the sun on their backs while the hawk followed them as far as the first fence.
