Two feathers on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows two feather designs on the inner forearm close to the wrist, one larger and upright and one smaller and angled towards the lower left. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft grey shading that fades into the skin around the quills and barbs. The ink is in black and grey tones against a pale skin tone and a plain white background, with the composition centred on the arm.

The gull came aboard off Cape Finisterre, a day out from Falmouth, and by dusk it had claimed the mainyard as its own. Mr Pollard wanted it shot. I wanted it left alone, partly because it reminded me of my sister, who arrived everywhere uninvited and always left something behind.

Two feathers came down that first night, one grey and ragged, the other pale at the tip with a dark spine as fine as a pencil stroke. I pressed them into the log at the page for the fourteenth of March, where the wind is recorded as south-westerly and the glass as falling. Nobody reads the log except the master and the Board, and neither of them looks at the margins.

Three weeks later, off the Horn, Pollard was lost overboard in a squall nobody saw, and the gull had long since gone. In the chart room I found the log open at that page and a note in his cramped hand: Tell the mate the gull was right about the weather. I had thought it only a gull. It was years before I understood he had meant the feathers, and that he had been watching me the whole voyage.

I sewed the upright one into the lining of my coat, where it still sits against my ribs. The other stays in the log, which I have never turned past the fourteenth of March, where the wind is forever south-westerly and the glass is forever falling.
