Two feathers on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two feathers drawn in thin, dark linework, one larger and upright and one smaller and angled to its left. Soft grey shading fades into the quill edges and barbs, giving the feathers a light, wispy look. The photograph is taken from the front of a pale forearm against a plain white background, with the tattoo placed on the inner wrist.

The ferryman's daughter kept two feathers in a tin box under her bed, one from the gull that had followed the boat all the way from the mainland, and one from the heron that stood in the shallows below the jetty every morning as if it were waiting for someone to pay it. She never told her father about the box. He had enough to carry, with the nets gone soft and the tide taking the lower pier a little more each winter.

The spring the storm came in from the west, she found the big feather on the step of the chapel, still damp, its quill split at the tip. She knew it was not the gull's. It was longer and darker, and the barbs had the grey bloom of something that had flown through weather. She took it home and laid it beside the others, and in the night she dreamed of a woman standing at the end of the jetty with her arms out, calling a name the wind kept tearing away before it reached the water.
In the morning the heron was gone from the shallows. Her father sat on the bench mending a rope with his thick, careful fingers and did not look up when she came out. She set the tin on the bench between them and opened it. He touched the largest feather once, the way you touch a thing you have been afraid to lose, and then he went back to the rope.
That evening they rowed out past the breakwater together, the small feather tucked inside her coat, and she let the wind take it from her hand. It turned twice over the water, light as a thought, and then it was gone into the grey, and her father said nothing at all, which was how she knew he had seen it go.
