Black ink mandala with lotus petals
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala drawn in black ink on a pale grey background, with eight pointed petals that curl at their tips. Each petal holds black teardrop shapes and small spirals, and a dotted circle sits at the centre. The design uses bold outlines and solid black fills with no shading, and it is entirely black and grey.

The canvas had been pitched on the same scrap of Yorkshire grass for eleven days, and every morning the damp had eaten a little more of the painted medallion on the centre panel. Ruth stood under it with a mug of stewed tea going cold in her hand and counted the petals the way other people counted their pills. Eight. Each one curled at the tip like a fern uncoiling, each holding its black teardrops and small spirals, and at the heart sat the dotted ring where Aurelio used to hang his brass hoop before he died in a Skegness boarding house with his boots still on.

Ferdie had already sold the elephant's saddle and the ticket van. He leaned in the flap with his cap pushed back and said the council wanted the site cleared by Friday, and that nobody would pay to see a tent with a rotten middle. Ruth didn't answer. She went to the props box, found the squat pot of Indian ink dried to a crust, thinned it with cold tea, and cut a brush from the end of an old horsehair bolster. Her hand shook over the first petal, and then it didn't.
By the fifth petal the light had turned gold through the canvas and the lads from the garage had wandered over to watch, which she pretended not to mind. When she reached the centre she found the dots had been painted in pairs, nineteen of them, one for every name still chalked on the company board. She looked at the empty space beside the last pair for a long time. Then she dipped the brush and added one more, small and round, the way Aurelio used to finish his signature on the poster boards.
That night the lamps went up and only forty people came, but the petals caught the light and seemed to turn slowly on the canvas, as if the whole tent were opening its hands. Ferdie stood at the back and took off his cap. Ruth kept the brush in her apron pocket all evening, just in case.
