Black lace band tattoo on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a thin black tattoo wrapped around the upper thigh, just below the frayed hem of distressed denim shorts. The design is a narrow band of lace-like diamond and mesh linework, drawn in crisp black ink with no shading. The composition is a tight crop of the waist and legs, with a white top, a gold watch and rings visible, against a plain pale background.

Ada had the mesh in her fingers before she had her letters, and by nine she could count a row of diamonds faster than the clerk on Hollis Street could count his change. The mill ran eleven frames then, and the lace came off them in long pale ribbons that the girls pinned along the walls so the overseer could admire his trade while he walked the floor.

Mr Pemberton wanted the diamonds drawn smaller every season, finer than a wren's eye, and the punch cards came up from the drawing room each Monday with the new pattern pricked into them. Ada threaded them onto the frame and watched the net grow hand over hand. Nobody at the mill called it art, but she knew a band of lace worn tight would hold its shape all summer if the mesh was true.
That spring a card came up with one hole stopped, a single diamond with its corner closed like a shut door. Pemberton said the frame would put it right. Ada said nothing, which was her habit, and that night she sat under the gas jet with the ribbon across her knees and unpicked eleven yards of it, row by row, until she found where the error had started.
In the morning she sent the ribbon out as it was, flaw and all, and kept the card. Forty years later her granddaughter found it in a biscuit tin and held it to the window. One diamond still stood shut at its corner, and the girl understood that Ada had been keeping a count of her own all along.
