Black script lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with the words "fall out boy" written in black cursive script across the skin. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with the loops of the letters clearly defined and the text running diagonally from lower left to upper right. The skin tone is warm and the background is out of focus, showing a grey tiled floor and a chair.

Dear Tobias,

The Bramley came down in the night, the whole lower limb of it, and I found the windfalls in the long grass by the water butt, bruised and sweet. Your grandad would have stood over them with his hands on his hips and called them the fall out boys, the way he'd chalked it on the crate lid in square carpenter's capitals. I've kept the crate. It sits in the shed beside the tins of linseed oil, and this morning I found the lid had split along the grain and the letters were lifting in the damp.
I've been wondering whether to sand it back and repaint it, or leave it be. Mrs Oyelaran from number nine says leave it, that a thing which has weathered ought to be let weather. She has a point. The apples she brought round on Sunday were all cheek and no blemish, and she's kept back the best of them for you, though you'll have to come and fetch them, because I'm not posting apples to London.
The apples aren't the point, really. Come in August. Bring the boy, if he still likes the swing. I'll leave the crate where it is, and we'll sort through the windfalls together, the good ones and the other sort, and you can tell me which of them you think is the real fall out boy.
Love, Aunt Maud
