Black scroll and heart flourish design
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink design of curling vines and spirals with several solid heart shapes along the stems. The linework is bold and uniform with no shading, and the design is printed on a pale, grained wood background. The composition is a tall vertical flourish filling most of the frame.

Dora had stamped four hundred hands since the doors opened at seven, and her wrist had settled into the rhythm of it: dip the block in the tin of violet ink, press, lift, next. The Mirabel's stamp was a slab of birch ply her late husband had cut, a tall curl of vine with hearts budding off it, and it was how the doorman knew who had paid the extra sixpence for the late waltz.

"Hand," said a voice, and she looked up at a lad in a borrowed collar who held out his palm the wrong way up. She turned it over for him. The ink went down crisp, every spiral sharp, the hearts solid as cut paper. "Mind it doesn't go on the floor," she said. "Mrs Pell has lost two pairs of shoes to the ink already." He laughed and was swallowed by the light and the brass.
Her husband had cut the block the winter they met, with a fret saw and a tin of patience. He had carved the hearts first, then the curls around them, saying a flourish ought to look like it was growing rather than drawn. For years she had stamped her own hand each Saturday and never once looked at the pattern. Tonight she did, and found the top curl had a small nick in it where his saw had slipped and he had laughed and left it.
At midnight, when the band slid into the last tango, she wiped the block clean with a rag and laid it in its box. On the back of her own hand, faint and violet, a heart had come out lopsided where she had pressed too fast. She decided to leave it there, and went out into the cold with the music still following her down the steps.
